CoGEA, formerly COSWA, is deepening our mission to achieve greater gender parity in anthropology through continued monitoring, advocacy, and education.
2009 was a year of review, reinvestment, and renewal.
We revised our mission statement and changed our name to align our identity more closely with a mandate of gender parity, and to provide a more expansive and inclusive arena for the consideration of all gender inequity issues. This change signals our interest in engaging transgender, women, and men in a comprehensive, discipline-wide dialogue.
- We prepared a 5 year report on COSWA activities.
- Elizabeth Tunstall (substituting for Christine Wasson) and Keri Brondo presented data on gender inequality within anthropology during a special session at the 2009 annual meeting, entitled "Academic and Work Climates, Gender and the Status of Academic and Practicing Anthropologists."
- As part of our advocacy and education mission, Holly Wardlow and Hanna Garth, organized and co-chaired a double session at the annual meetings entitled Mentoring Women 'at home' and 'in the field': Thinking Critically about Mentorship, 'Capacity-Building,' and Working with Field Assistants. This well attended session generated a lively discussion about mentoring "at home" and "in the field." Participants included: Patricia B Lerch, Karen L Ishizuka, Cynthia L Van Gilder, Desiree R Martinez, Jennifer R Wies, Angela C Glaros, Irma McClaurin, Jennifer S Hirsch, Junjie J Chen, Shanti A Parikh, Holly Wardlow, and Deborah L Crooks.
- Constance Sutton was presented with the CoGEA Award, recognizing her extensive contributions to improving the understanding of gender relations as well as the professional lives of her students and colleagues within the field.
We anticipate continued enthusiasm for CoGEA invited sessions as we prepare for this year's annual meeting.

COSWA has developed a Yahoo Group whereby individuals interested in gender parity within anthropology can have a space to engage one another as well as share concerns or issues that they may be facing. See http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/coswa/ for more information. You can join by sending a blank email to coswa-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.
