Report of the Special Commission to Investigate the Situation of
the Brazilian Yanomami
This 1991 Report of the Special Commission antedates the founding of the Committee for Human Rights (1995) and its predecessor, the AAA’s Commission for Human Rights (1992). Although the Report was circulated rather widely, it was never published and has since been difficult to obtain. The report is the principal written product of the largest single case intervention the AAA has ever undertaken in defense of the cultural rights of an indigenous group.
The Report is included here because this highly significant AAA action demonstrated an approach the Association could use to legitimately and effectively intervene on behalf of the human rights of an indigenous group. Following the completion of the work of the Special Commission, the AAA Executive Board established the Commission for Human Rights in 1992, mandated to produce, within three years, a plan for a permanent Committee for Human Rights. That plan was subsequently approved by the AAA’s Executive Board in October, 1995.
