Meeting Call for Papers Announcement
Mediating Region in East Asia
|Sponsor: AAA Meeting 2013 (Chicago)|
4747 30th Ave. NE
Seattle WA 98105 United States
Recent work on media reception and production in various national contexts has illustrated the complex ways new and old media reinforces national identity and senses of “imagined community.” However, media’s place in shaping regional identity within nations, or its importance in connections across regions, has been relatively underexplored in the anthropological literature. We seek panelists working in East Asia (but excluding South Korea in order to balance out the existing papers) to complete a panel on the productions of region both within individual East Asian countries and across transnational East Asia (with intersections with other parts of Asia also possible). Papers might address topics including but not limited to television and film’s role in local identity or local tourism, differential access to or uses of social media, and mediated pan-Asian social movements. Please send abstracts (along with name, contact information and affiliation) to Bonnie Tilland at firstname.lastname@example.org by April 5, 2013. Accepted panelists will need to register for AAA membership and the 2013 conference by the panel submission deadline of April 15th.
