The AAA supports the
Iraq Cultural Heritage Protection Act (H.R. 2009)

The AAA supports the Iraq Cultural Heritage Protection Act (H.R. 2009) introduced by Representatives Phil English (R-PA) and Jim Leach (R-IA) on May 7. It was drafted in response to the extensive looting and destruction of Iraq's cultural heritage, including the loss of archaeological materials and cultural materials housed at museums and cultural sites in Iraq during and following the war with Iraq. The legislation would ban the import of archaeological and cultural materials from Iraq into the U.S. unless they are certified by appropriate documentation that they were not exported in violation of the laws of Iraq. In addition, the legislation would aid the return of looted materials by authorizing Customs to seize such materials and return them to Iraq.

The Iraq Cultural Heritage Protection Act has been referred to the House Committee on Ways and Means. The AAA sent letters of support to Committee Chairman William Thomas and Ranking Democrat Charles Rangel, as well as our Representative, Jim Moran (D-VA).
