Studies funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on sexual behavior were the subject of Congressional inquiry following a joint hearing of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee on October 2, 2003. NIH's peer review system was challenged by questions raised over the validity of social and behavioral research focused on substance abuse, sexually transmitted diseases, and HIV/AIDS. NIH, professional organizations and others defended the studies.
On January 21, 2003 AAA President Elizabeth Brumfiel wrote a letter of support for the NIH studies, emphasizing the value of this research to public health.
