Ted Bestor, chair of the anthropology department at Harvard University and an executive board member of the AAA, was featured on CBS’s 60 Minutes on January 13 in "The King of Sushi," a segment on the global tuna trade and the crisis of overfishing.
During the five to six day television interview, Bestor brought the CBS team around the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo, a large-scale, bustling marketplace which Beston describes as a global, high-speed trade center which thrives on the Japanese culinary tradition of fresh fish. Bestor is the author of Tsukiji: The Fish Market at the Center of the World, a book published in 2004 by the University of California Press. Currently, he is writing Global Sushi: Soft Power and Hard Reality, a forthcoming book about overfishing and the environmental impact of food culture.
