Call for Papers: Participation Rules

1. Participants must be AAA members in good standing or request a waiver

2. Participants may present one paper/poster and may accept only one other non-paper role (ie. discussant, organizer, chair).

  • A participant may appear as a co-author for one or more additional papers when co-authorship means participation on a research project.  The presenter’s name will appear first in the program.
  • Appearances in the special events program, such as leading a workshop, do not count as an additional role on the scholarly program.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the participant roles?

The organizer mobilizes presenters around a particular topic. This person makes sure that the session abstract and the session structure (list of participants) is submitted to the AAA . In addition, the person ensures that presenters submit their abstracts and registrations to AAA. In fact, the organizer should also make sure that the participants complete submission and registration by April 1. The organizer will encourage presenters to get their papers to the discussants.

The session chairperson moderates the session. This frequently includes a few words of introduction about the topic and how the session will work. For example, the chairperson will want to tell presenters that they will have to stop talking when their 15 minutes are up. The chairperson concludes the session on time.

The discussant is responsible for highlighting the relationships between papers and the topic. He/She has received the papers a few weeks before the meeting and has prepared comments. This person will raise critical issues for both the presenters and the audience to think about.

What is the one role participation rule?

You may give only one paper.

In the same session, a presenter may have these combination of roles: organizer/chair, organizer/introduction, organizer discussant, organizer/paper.  These combinations count as one role in the same session.

As a paper presenter, you may have a second role as chair, or discussant in another session.

We will use the first legitimate role entered for participants with too many roles.

What are the rules for co-authors?

Co-authors of papers do not have to be AAA members.

A presenter may be the first author of only one paper, but may be the 2nd/3rd co-author of any number of papers.

Co-authors are indentified by the principal author.

Co-authors do not have to register.
