Membership Categories Dues Benefits and Eligibility Requirements (Note: All AAA memberships require one AAA Section membership.)
Professional Membership

AAA Professional dues are based on annual income. Please find your annual income range below to determine your annual dues.
$0-20,000 = $60
$20,001-24,999 = $138
$25,000-49,999 = $174
$50,000-74,999 = $204
$75,000-99,999 = $235
$100,000-124,999 = $265
$125,000-149,999 = $296
$150,000 and up = $326

Benefits: AAA professional members receive a subscription to Anthropology News and American Anthropologist as well as access to AAA's journals on AnthroSource. Professional members also pay reduced registration fees to AAA meetings as well as reduced prices on AAA books, monographs and merchandise.

Eligibility: Any person having a demonstrable professional or scholarly interest in the science of anthropology shall be eligible to be a member of the association. A professional interest in the science of anthropology is defined as a serious concern in the subject in accordance with the standards generally accepted in the profession, whether or not the interest is a source of livelihood.

Documentation: Subject to annual verification of student status; a copy of a valid Student ID card or enrollment documents must be submitted to the AAA national office to avail of and to continue your AAA memberships at this rate. Your student membership will be considered pending until the documentation is received.

Undergraduate Student Membership (Documentation required)

Pricing is $30 and includes National Association of Student Anthropologists membership.

Anthropology club advisors may submit undergraduate student members at a discount. Visit the membership page for more information.

Benefits: Undergraduate student membership includes membership to the National Association of Student Anthropologists as well as student rates for additional section memberships. Benefits include member rates for products and services, regular installments of AnthroNews and Student eNews (e-Newsletters), and online access via AnthroSource to AAA's publications, Anthropology News and American Anthropologist as well as section publications.

Eligibility: Retired membership is available to any individual who has been an active AAA member for at least 20 years and who has either reached the age of 65 or has retired status in one's institution.

Joint Membership

The partner or spouse will pay 55% of the professional, student or retired dues amount based on the salary of the primary member.

$100,000-124,999 = $146

Benefits: Joint members do not receive AAA publications (American Anthropologist and Anthropology News) but will have access to AnthroSource as well as reduced rates for meeting registration, products and services.

Eligibility: This category is available to the spouse/partner of an ACTIVE member who pays dues at the full professional, retired or student rate. Joint membership does not apply to members whose spouse/domestic partner is an International, Non-Anthropologist Associate or Undergraduate Member. Spouses/partners of Lifetime members may be joint members at the rate that the Lifetime member would pay for a professional membership based on their salary range.

Non-Anthropologist Associate Membership (Documentation required) Non-Anthropologist Associate Members pay basic annual membership dues of $125. Benefits: AAA Non-Anthropologist Associate members receive a subscription to Anthropology News and American Anthropologist as well as access to AAA's journals on AnthroSource. Non-Anthropologist Associate members also pay reduced registration fees for AAA meetings as well as reduced prices on AAA books, monographs and merchandise.

Documentation and eligibility: Non-Anthropologist Associate membership is only available to persons whose interest is strictly avocational and who do not derive income from any anthropologically related activities. Subject to annual verification, you are required to send a letter to the AAA national office indicating your title and position using your employer's official letterhead to become eligible for or to continue your AAA memberships at this rate. Please note that consulting anthropologists are ineligible for Associate status.

Non-Anthropologist Associate members can hold elective offices, but have nonvoting status in the Association. Non-Anthropologist Associate memberships are considered pending until supporting documentation is received.

International Professional Membership - Special Rates Permanent residents of countries in this category pay basic annual membership dues of $30.

Benefits: International professional members will receive the print edition of Anthropology News and online access to AnthroSource. International members also pay reduced registration fees for AAA meetings as well as reduced prices on AAA books, monographs and merchandise. International Professional Members do not qualify for student or retired registration fees.

Eligibility: International professional membership special rate is available only to individuals living in countries below:

  • Africa: All countries
  • South America: All countries
  • Central America & Caribbean: All countries
  • Europe: Albania, Belarus, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Turkey, Ukraine.
  • Asia: All countries except those with World Bank more developed country designation.
  • North America: Mexico
Lifetime Membership The lifetime membership fee of US $4,000 may be paid in one lump-sum payment or in four equal annual installments. Secure your future membership at today's rates. Affirm your support of the Association's mission to promote and advance the science of Anthropology by becoming a lifetime member. Lifetime members will have access to all of the services and benefits offered to professional members. Lifetime membership is available to new members and current good-standing members.
