| Abstract: |
The Maya site of San Bartolo is located in the northeastern part of the Department of the Petén, Guatemala and was occupied between 500 B.C.–A.D. 200 before it was abandoned. The site was reoccupied around A.D. 600, and there is evidence that abandoned structures and monuments were reused by these later settlers. These people may have migrated from the site of Xultun, located 8 km to the southeast and a regional center during this time period. Ceramic evidence though suggests origins in Belize. Excavations carried out in a residential group (Group 38) exposed five burials containing in total ten individuals. This is the first substantial and remarkably well preserved osteological sample we have from the site and thus has given us a great opportunity in not only understanding something of the treatment and manner of the disposal of the dead, but also of the lifestyle of the inhabitants at this site. In addition, strontium isotope analysis was carried out on a selection of teeth from these individuals to confirm whether the settlers were local to the area. Results from bioarchaeological studies shed light both on ancient migration and the creation and maintenance of community identity. |
