Paper Title: PLANT USE, SOCIAL RELATIONS, AND STUDYING WITH TIM EARLE
Author: CHRISTINE HASTORF (University of California-Berkeley)
Date/Time: Sat., 10:30 AM
Co-Author(s): CHRISTINE HASTORF (University of California-Berkeley)
Abstract: Even when he was a young faculty member, having Tim Earle as an advisor was a coveted position, because he knew how to help his students develop their passions. Tim mentored his students in the classroom and in the field; he even taught me how to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle, an essential skill for any archaeologist. In this paper, I trace my own intellectual development, from when I first learned about economic least-cost modeling and other ways to describe and explain agricultural systems to a broader understanding of the role of plants in human societies. Nearly three decades of research demonstrate how subtle shifts in agricultural production (and resource procurement more generally) are closely linked to the development of political economies and social inequality. More generally, we see that the study of plant-human interactions, agricultural production and distribution, plant choice, and foodways are all clearly integral to social relations, political dynamics, and issues of social identity construction.
