| Abstract: |
Marcel Mauss, Annette Weiner and Maurice Godelier have written at length about the "enigma of the gift." They argue, in one way or another, that the gift without any further expectations is a social impossibility. Bourdieu's theories on symbolic capital have considerably reinforced this conviction. I refer to Derrida's conceptualization of hospitality and his difference between "visitation" and "invitation" to argue that anthropological discussions are driven by commodification ideologies. Archaeology may not provide us with proof of the gift without expectations. However, it opens up discursive spaces to discuss their possibilities. I use a case from Neolithic Iran to show this potential. |
