Paper Title: PUBLIC ARCHAEOLOGY AT COLLIER LODGE

Abstract: “Public Archaeology at Collier Lodge” is an annual cooperative enterprise that benefits the Kankakee Valley Historical Society (KVHS) and the University of Notre Dame. It began in 2003 with a two-day exercise designed to show field school students how to quickly assess a site for archaeological significance. After working on a prehistoric site in an isolated cornfield, the students - and their professor - went into culture shock when they arrived at Collier Lodge to find dozens of people lined up in lawn chairs waiting for the action to begin. The project now gives over 100 people a year the chance to participate in a dig. The main point of Public Archaeology at Collier Lodge is to help the KVHS preserve the site and to raise the visibility of Kankakee Valley archaeology and history. The Collier Lodge site was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. My talk will begin with a brief introduction to the project, followed by a short video about the site. The narration of the video is in an idiom familiar to archaeological professionals. The images were selected by John Hodson, president of the KVHS. The juxtaposition of the verbal and visual presentations provides unusual insight into how professionals and the public view the project in different but complementary ways.
