| Abstract: |
Timothy Earle’s thinking about chiefly polities is neatly synthesised in two books: How Chiefs Come to Power and Bronze Age Economics. In these two volumes, archaeological case studies from across the world reveal varied trajectories for the emergence of social inequality, divergent paths to leadership, and contrasting dynamics of political economy. Grounded in an appreciation of the economic realities of human existence, Tim’s work widened throughout his career to encompass ideology, culture, and agency, as well as exploring more corporate forms of socio-political organisation. In this paper, I will (1) reflect critically upon Tim’s contributions; (2) identify new directions, empirical and theoretical, for the study of regional polities, and (3) briefly present recent research results from Argentina. The Andean case study investigates regional political organisation specifically, with the wider aim of contributing to comparative and empirical documentation of regional polities across the world, continuing a research tradition so effectively initiated – and sustained - by Tim Earle throughout his career. |
