| Abstract: |
Exploring Post-1850 coastal life, especially on abandoned remote islands such as InisAirc, Co. Galway, Ireland, requires members of the Cultural Landscapes of the Irish Coast project to blend together archaeological remains, historical records, and oral accounts from local islanders. Our interest in developing a multi-faceted and local understanding of changing island life on InisAirc, which was abandoned in 1960, has led us as anthropologists and archaeologists to develop two major community projects: to organize a local heritage festival for islanders each summer, and to develop a program for bringing back and filming people on the remote islands where they lived. In sharing what we learn as archaeologists with local islanders, the heritage event provides an important way of creating community partnerships, discussing what we are learning as researchers, and drawing them into the reconstruction of their past. While logistically complex, especially given the remoteness of the islands and the age of the islanders, bringing back islanders to InisAirc has helped us develop a much richer understanding of the archaeology of the historical and living past, one that is informed by the words, experiences and memories of the islanders. Interviewing them on the island, and more importantly, recording this on video, has placed their voices at the center of the resulting narrative. |
