Abstract: The Bahamas is an archipelagic nation with individual islands spread across thousands of miles of Atlantic waters. Twentieth century technology continues to link these islands through large “mail boats” for cargo, airplanes for passenger travel, telecommunications for business and personal interactionss, and television and radio media that deliver news to outlying islands from the population centers of Grand Bahama and Nassau. Prior to these modes and mediums, connectivity among islands was at a different pace and the movement of ideas and commodities was a far more precarious enterprise. This was particularly true for populations that were not in positions of political, economic, or social power, particularly formerly enslaved peoples and their descendants. This paper uses a combination of historical and archaeological evidence to theorize how small, local communities across the archipelago exchanged information and knowledge during the 19th century. Continuities in symbolic practices can be studied archaeologically through preserved images from 19th century sites throughout the Bahamas and can help to flesh out limited historical accounts that point to the sporadic and precarious interconnectivity of these islands. In this context, archaeological evidence can point to ways that local communities were connected to broader constructions of identity, and reveal how people and ideas circulated in the 19th century Bahamian archipelago.
