| Abstract: |
In forwarding the argument that western models inadequately capture the economic priorities and transactional dynamics of African societies, archaeologists of Africa have found Jane Guyer and Samuel Belinga’s (1995) notion of ‘wealth-in-people’ a useful frame for analyzing past processes of community formation. More recently in Marginal Gains (2004) Guyer took note that, productive as notions of investment in social relations or wealth-in-people have been, they cannot account for the massive sale of people through the course of the Atlantic slave trade. In this paper I use debt as a lens through which to explore processes of enslavement and the material negotiation of these processes through shrine-related practices in West Africa. |
