| Abstract: |
Looking for My Mother (Camp): Mighty Realness and Esther Newton in the 21st Century
Using a critical and close reading of Esther Newton’s works, I argue that this corpus represents a paradigmatic turn in queer scholarship. . She unravels a seemingly monolithic sex/gender system into a series of performative moments that pivot around a fictive realness thereby allowing us to transform the way we think about sexuality and gender. Newton extends the theoretical discussion by imbuing her meticulous and sensitive ethnographies and ethnohistories of queer communities with an ebullient ethos that can be juxtaposed with the exuberance and pathos of late twentieth century America. She provides not only an expansive analytical frame but also an affective archive or a way of “feeling” one’s way to the future by going beyond the morass of Reaganomics, the AIDS pandemic and the travails of the LGBTQ movement. |
