Abstract: Literature on peasantry tends to consider land, eater, forest, or other strategic natural resources, as means of economic subsistence that are owned or managed in common by peasant groups or “communities” in order to rationalize their use and distribution in the benefit all members of a group. Following Trouillot’s work on the Dominican peasantry, I examine the total economic process of livelihood acquisition—production, consumption, and exchange—for several kinds of localities. Rather than attend only to access to natural resource, I seek to reveal how the concept of common management or corporation is extended to other arenas where rural societies develop in relation to the global order as these rural localities maintain their condition of peasantry through corporative control of what residents conceive of as their main source of livelihood for social reproduction.
