Abstract: This paper will consider the role of mobility and materiality in the lives and legacies of 18th and 19th century Nipmuc basketmakers in New England. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries Native women in New England often peddled handmade baskets regionally in order to earn a living. At a time when Native families across New England were rapidly losing property and access to resources due to English land encroachment, basketselling, and mobility in general, became an increasingly important way for Native people to engage with and negotiate the colonial economy. As a result of their travels, Nipmuc basketmakers like Sarah Boston of Grafton, Massachusetts became well known in regional lore and have remained enigmatically tied to local town histories into the present. This project strives to employ archaeology in the study of placemaking not just at the household level, but also on a larger regional scale through the study of Native baskets. In this paper I will attempt to reconstruct the social landscapes formed by the movement of women and baskets through the New England countryside. Then I will look more closely at the circulation of these baskets and the stories that accompanied them over the course of the 19th century leading up to their curation in local museums.
