Abstract: This paper concerns the replication and transformation of images in the Precolumbian and more recent past and the itineraries that are woven through these processes. Specifically, this work is focused on itineraries of images that begin (or end) with woodcarvings that were replicated on Swift Creek Complicated Stamped pottery of the Middle and Late Woodland period (ca. AD 100 to 800) in the Southeastern United States. Distinctive surface treatments on pottery were made by impressing carved wooden paddles, each bearing a unique representation of plants, animals, anthropomorphic faces, or other themes, into wet clay vessels before firing. The impressions of wooden paddles on vessels rarely preserved the image of an entire carved design; however, the designs have been “reconstructed” by archaeologists by piecing together their fragments. In all cases, the image operated and moved through inverted replicas of an “original” woodcarving. By following the transformations of an image through various media, places, and people, persistent networks between and among communities are revealed. The materiality of drawings on paper and in electronic format mark a disjuncture in accumulated linkages to places and also new possibilities for creating connections. Even in the two-dimensional and cyber forms of designs, places where images come to rest often parallel their manifestations in previous forms.
