Abstract: Ancient roadways emphasize the spatial relationships between people, identity, and places. Their permanence and physical presence convey distinct social messages in parallel to their more prosaic functions. In this paper we explore some ways in which roadways in different social and cultural settings embody political identities and ground them in place -- how creating architecture gives physical presence to identity, making it “real” to those who build and use them. We present comparative data from two “prehistoric” roadway systems, Chaco Canyon in the American Southwest and the Island of Maui, Hawai’i. We argue that the construction of roadways simultaneously inscribed community identity upon earthly landscapes and on landscapes of the mind.
