Abstract: The Hummingbird Pueblo (LA 578), NM is a large late 13th-early 15th century ancestral pueblo that exhibits significant variability in the materials, techniques, layout, and scales of domestic and public architectural spaces. Previous examination of the surface wall remnants noted preferential use of soil sources in the growth of the settlement, in what appeared to be an enculturated practice of newcomers at the site during the tumultuous transitional Pueblo III-IV period. Excavations at the site recorded a variety of architectural features, and a broad diversity of artifact types, both locally made and imported. This paper presents the analytical results of the combined excavated and surface material, and discusses assumptions and poses hypotheses on the organization and production of the built environment. As human activities and social perceptions shape and are shaped by architectural layout and form, this research explores the social correlates of the building behaviors of the prehistoric residents, and provides an additional perspective into the dynamics of the community’s indigenous, and mobile, migrant groups.
