| Abstract: |
In 1987, Tim Earle and I published an article entitled “Processual Archaeology and the Radical Critique.” This article was one of the first systematic evaluations of the emerging field of Postprocessual archaeology. Now, some twenty-three years later, Postprocessualism has diversified into a broad and diverse research program. Most approaches share a commitment to the social relevance of archaeology and have foregrounded such key issues as authority, representation, multivocality, and writing. However, some versions of Postprocessualism are solipsistic and moving away from the social in their exploration of people/thing hybrids. In my presentation, I evaluate these approaches in the context of what Steve Mrozowski and I have called the “New Pragmatism,” the renewed commitment to archaeology's relevance in the modern world. |
