Abstract: The study of exchange systems has been a central element of archaeological anthropology for decades, thanks in large part to the work of Timothy Earle and his colleagues. This paper explores conceptions of material existence and space in the Andes – one of Earle’s core research regions – to ask how such ideas affected the flow of objects and meanings.
