Abstract: This paper examines long-term land-use patterns in the Soconusco region of Chiapas, Mexico. Soconusco is an exceptionally fertile region located in the humid tropics of southern Mexico, and the evidence suggests that the region’s residents have long engaged in a constellation of activities that have been identified in many parts of the humid tropics around the world: swidden agriculture, homegardens, and cultivating in forest plots (“forest gardens”). One goal of this paper is to illustrate how the use of multiple sources of data can help us to better understand land-use patterns in the past and present. I begin by reviewing archaeological data, primarily paleobotanical studies and settlement pattern data. I then turn to ethnohistorical data, both pictorial and narrative, from the Late Postclassic period to the early 20th century, that provide information about land-use and environment. Finally I examine evidence for more recent land-use patterns using ethnographic data and a GIS-based analysis of aerial photos from the past 40 years. Using this multidisciplinary approach, we can explore change and continuity in land-use patterns in Soconusco over the past 5,000 years.
