Author: PETER MACHINIST (Harvard University)
Date/Time: Thu., 8:15 AM
Co-Author(s): PETER MACHINIST (Harvard University)
Abstract: Norman Yoffee and I have known each other for almost forty-five years, from our graduate student days at Yale, our years of teaching at the University of Arizona, and beyond. Part of this paper, thus, is a set of reminiscences on our shared experience and on what this illuminates for me of Yoffee as scholar, teacher, and colleague. But intertwined with these reminiscences are some reflections on Yoffee's many-sided scholarship - a scholarship that is unusually, if not uniquely, interdisciplinary, moving as it does quite self-consciously between anthropology and ancient history, theory and data, philology and archaeology, and antiquity and modernity.
