Abstract: Organizations encounter culture in a variety of ways: the changing marketplaces and client mix, the demographics of the global workforce, and their own organizational culture. The need to build culturally agility as a key capability of leaders is frequently recognized, articulated, and supported through specific learning and development, coaching and organizational development initiatives. This presentation focuses on the experiences of three global organizations representing the manufacturing, engineering, and professional services industries in equipping their leaders with the mind- and skill sets required to lead in a culturally diverse environment. We will explore the reasons for over-simplifying the phenomenon of culture and perceiving it as a problem to be “managed” and leadership competency to “develop.” We will analyze and discuss the prevalent discourse on culture, cultural diversity, and the use of assessment and information tools, such as the Cultural Navigator or GlobeSmart for building cultural agility. We evaluate lessons learned from practitioner, user, client and provider perspectives. Finally, we will provide specific suggestions for a relevant and sound approach to the real and perceived cultural challenges of organizations.
