| Abstract: |
A group of American and Mexican archaeologists are preparing an archaeological project in the ANP (Área Natural Protegida) of Metzabok, Chiapas, that will closely involve local indigenous communities. As a student attached to the prospective project, the author began traveling to Metzabok in the summer of 2008 with the intention of using ethnographic methods to discover community understandings of and interests in archaeology and concepts relating to the past. This paper will outline the results of three field seasons of ongoing interaction between archaeologists and community members and discuss the various failures and successes that employing ethnographic methodologies as collaborative tools have entailed. Furthermore, the presenter will describe his attempts to formulate an archaeological research agenda for his graduate career that corresponds to local concerns and interests about the past. This presentation is intended to engage graduate students of archaeology in a discussion about how concepts from the post-colonial critique of archaeology can be incorporated into method and practice at the graduate level. |
