| Abstract: |
The gradual decline of the Bronze Age city at Qufu was followed by the rise of a major state ritual site centered on the veneration of Confucius, a famed resident of the 5th century BCE, at the site. Through the history of imperial China, this ritual complex had become an ontological ground where political statements about order and legitimacy were made and critical debates were fought. A regional survey of the “Confucian landscape,” centered at the Bronze Age city and the later ritual center, aims to place the metropolitan city, the temple in its memory, and their hinterland sites in a unified field of interaction. The field research brings architectural, performative, and inscriptional representations of order and continuity face to face with archaeological remains for crisis and contention. It reveals the complex archaeological and historical processes that shaped the local world, which alternated between monumental efforts to represent order and continuity for the imperial ideology and the destruction of equal magnitude that came with each episode of violent rupture. The question of how order reconciles with rupture and crisis lies central to this investigation. |
