| Abstract: |
Graduate education in anthropology is not what it used to be. In the 1970s, cohorts within one department and, often spanning two or more, interacted to figure out matriculation rules, review coursework, swap texts, argue about theory and methodology or their political motivations and implications, share information about research projects and funding opportunities, and gossip about contemporaries and predecessors. Forming Goffmanesque “withs,” cohorts learned anthropology’s canon to endorse and criticize it. Michel-Rolph Trouillot and I became intellectual sparring partners in 1978. We agree about many matters having to do with science and politics, culture and history, power and knowledge, and race and skin color, along with other intersecting vectors of collective and personal identity. However, our disagreements about concepts, methods, and their deployment in historically informed ethnographic projects are equally important for understanding our understandings of Haiti (his homeland), the USA (mine), the Caribbean region, and the world. My account of the Trouillot-Woodson “with” since 1978 will explore how two anthropologists learned their discipline and have mentored students in the World Anthropology Age. |
