Abstract: This paper will discuss a model of university-community engagement in research and action. The Nuevo South Community Research Initiative (NSCRI) is a university-community collaborative with the Latino community at East Carolina University (ECU). It was created in Fall 2009 by faculty from the Department of Anthropology in partnership with grassroots organizations and service providers. The paper will draw from the findings of an ethnographic study conducted in 2010 by the authors using participant observation as a methodological context. The following will be discussed: a) the theory of the program from the point of view of participants, b) the connection between research and practice, c) the barriers and facilitators of collaboration, d) the community and university perspectives on collaboration and engagement, and e) some of the engaged research outcomes of this collaborative. Additionally, findings will be discussed from the theoretical and methodological perspectives given by applied anthropology, community engagement, and participatory-action research.
