Abstract: Processes of state formation and imperial expansion transformed the Cusco region of highland Peru from a decentralized patchwork of autonomous local polities into a densely populated and cosmopolitan region dominated by royal lineages. At a regional level, this transformation can be understood in terms of the reconfiguration of networks of power and influence that developed in the region after AD 1000. Regional survey data collected in the past decade provide an archaeological perspective on how networks of political, economic, and ideological power were altered. Economic intensification changed the agrarian landscape and the production and distribution of craft goods like pottery. The spread of Inka political power can be identified through the construction of architecture adhering to the imperial canon. Royal and state ideologies may be inferred in the distribution of carved rock outcrops, ritual architecture, and ethnohistorically known shrine locations. Complementing the perspective of regional archaeology, the ethnohistoric record documents the power of the Inka state in descriptions of the imperial heartland, as well as in the Quechua vocabulary used to describe power and authority. This paper will synthesize survey data with a range of documentary sources to consider continuity and change in local power structures as the Inkas established imperial control.
