| Abstract: |
The story of San Antonio is undeniably linked to ‘Remembering the Alamo’. Defined by Davey Crockett and John Wayne, this Anglocentric version of history marginalized the roles Tejanos played in Texas’ past. Here, mythical history entered social memory, thus creating a dominant historical narrative, and altering Tejano identity. In recent years, there has been a clear effort to insert the Tejano past into Texas’ dominant historical narrative. Prominent Tejano historians have responsibly explored the archives to redefine Texas history and reshape the Tejano identity. This kind of archival work is a reflection of how memory can continue to circulate and change long after history is written. This paper expands on this theme by the examining the archaeological record from a site located in downtown San Antonio, Texas. This investigation focuses on the relationships between the material culture and the two prominent Bexareno families who owned and occupied the site from settlement in 1731 to the 20th century. Furthermore, this analysis considers the materiality of these households in the context of an evolving Tejano identity in an attempt to deconstruct dominant memories and further contribute to a multi-vocal past. |
