Abstract: Colonial contacts among French traders, Native Americans, and enslaved and free Africans began along the Bayou Teche during the 1730s, inaugurating a process of social and cultural hybridization. One important conduit in this process was the introduction and development of a stock herding economy. Early brand books from south Louisiana list the registrations of brands belonging to Indians, French settlers, and Free People of Color. These registrations provide two types of data relevant to understanding colonial transformations occurring along the Bayou Teche, and colonial Louisiana in general. First, the lists of personal names of herders, along with their associated ethnic ascriptions, reveal a surprising range of cultural hybridization. Second, the actual designs of the brands appear to symbolically represent meaningful associations with distinct cultural heritages. Semiotic analysis of some of these designs suggests the continuity of separate cultural traditions amidst the obvious forces of hybridization. Other designs seem to symbolize the cultural blendings that typically accompany colonial entanglements and hybridization.
