| Abstract: |
Diverse opinions exist today in the field of archaeology about under what circumstances and in what form ethnographic analogies are appropriate for helping to interpreting past social interaction. Despite this diversity, some patterns do emerge. To the extent that researchers may define very generalized paradigm shifts in the field of archaeology, for example, we may also trace changes in the prevailing opinions about the appropriateness of applying ethnographic analogies to promote cultural interpretations. In this paper I outline trends through time in archaeologists’ use of ethnographic analogy as indicated by patterns of publication in major journals. In addition, I make some observations about the even more ambivalent attitude ethnographers have historically had toward applications of archaeological data. Using the example of Oaxacan coastal archaeology, I will suggest that there is still a time for cautious liaisons between these two realms of anthropological study, especially in historically and contextually contingent circumstances. Boas and Kroeber might be gone, but the most fruitful cooperation between subfields and between researchers trained in multiple anthropological methods may be still to come. |
