| Abstract: |
The region currently under investigation by Proyecto Salinas de los Nueve Cerros covers a variety of political units—a national park, a nature reserve, private land owned by members of several communities, and, at its center, a large finca co-managed by the municipality of Coban and an association of over 30 local villages. The finca is currently the focus of a heated struggle between the municipality, which supports drilling for oil underneath it and the local association, which supports its development for locally-run ecotourism. In this paper, we discuss the role the archaeological and anthropological research undertaken by project members is having in shaping the future of the region and our collaborations with local and international development projects, community leaders, and the municipal and national government. |
