Paper Title: VALE DE ÓBIDOS: AN INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH TO UNDERSTANDING UPPER PALEOLITHIC SOCIETY

Abstract: Distinct activity areas at the open-air Upper Paleolithic campsite of Vale de Óbidos evidence a very wide range of behaviors including hide-working, plant and resin processing, pigment production, stone-boiling, animal butchery, wood working, and composite projectile manufacturing. Variability in flaked stone technological organization, raw material economy, and typology corroborates and reinforces the interpretation that Upper Paleolithic forager social organization structured intrasite spatial organization. An examination of other late Gravettian sites in Portugal contextualizes the archaeological patterns at VdO on a regional level. This interdisciplinary approach integrating multiple lines of evidence provides an intriguing glimpse of Paleolithic society prior to the last glacial maximum.
