| Abstract: |
This paper explores the importance of heritage with regards to archaeology. It investigates community identity surrounding the local archaeology in the slate quarry region of Ireland. Key topics include heritage at a local level, construcion of meaning, and loval view of an area's archaeology. Essential contributions to community identity are common history and shared experiences. Additionally, the preservation of a site for thousands of years, rather than destruction and reuse of the land, indicate importance. The paper examines archaeology as an heirloom for the people in the slate quarry region, south-west Kilkenny and south-east Tipperary. Also, it explores how meanings relating to the heirlooms change over time. Archaeology focused on were determined by the local community and include Knockroe, Kilkieran, Slievenamon, and Ahenny, among others. The project investigates site importance and the creation and determining factors contributing to site significance. This paper delves into the multi-scalar nature of meaning and memory associated with archaeology ranging through different time and typology. |
