| Abstract: |
This paper addresses a collaborative applied ethnographic archaeology project in an indigenous land-grant community in Copan Ruinas, Honduras. We discuss the ethnographic study of efforts and protocols developed to protect looted, damaged, and threatened ruins at one of Copan's largest and most important architectural complexes, located in a sub-community known as Rincon del Buey 2, just west of the the modern city center. The timing of this project overlaps with the birth in January 2009 of a new (second and alternative) national organization for the Chorti Maya. We examine the role that this organization plays in our project and in the communities it represents, and we explain how an intriguing by-product of the project is a documentation of the organization's emergence, character, and goals. |
