| Abstract: |
Recent anthropological and archaeological research has highlighted the unique essence of ancient Andean cities with respect to economic structures, social and demographic arrangements, and the role of religious ideologies. These developments force scholars to reassess the ontological aspects of ancient Andean urban life and its materiality. Considering that social practices are part of an ongoing process of making and remaking the social and material worlds that involve not so much the representation of abstract structures, but rather active strategies embedded in a dialectic relationship with the “rules of the game”, this contribution explores the materiality of urban life in coastal Peru during the 1st millennium BC. I present the results on ongoing archaeological investigations at Caylán, an important urban settlement organized around a complex layout of monumental compounds, plazas, avenues and hilltop terraces. I review spatial and material data from mapping and excavation operations in order to venture into the various realms of human engagement in the making of Caylán from planning strategies to architectural dynamics, craft production, and the materialization of religious ideologies. |
