Abstract: We report the analyses of two cores drilled in the Gulf of Mexico in water depths of 50 (High Island 178) and 100 (Galveston 356) feet. Both sites have charcoal units in the cores. Cores taken in a wide circle around these cores do not display charcoal units indicating that we are not dealing with a regional fire event, and that the units may represent hearths. Preliminary 14C analyses indicate that the inshore site (178) has a charcoal unit dating to ~9,500 years BP, while the deeper, and presumably older site is awaiting results. The seismic survey data indicate that the sites are located on levees or river terraces, and the preliminary pollen and foraminifera data indicate the proximity of a backwater/estuarine environment. The magnetic susceptibility (MS) data clearly define the observed lithologic units and charcoal horizons indicating significant cyclicity in depositional regimes. Analyses for the presence of lipids and fats within the charcoal units, and analyses of possible human use of large shell fossils are currently ongoing. While we have yet to find unequivocal evidence of human occupation or tools, the fossil, charcoal and environmental evidence is strongly suggestive of human habitation on palaeoshorelines now buried in the Gulf of Mexico shelf.
