| Abstract: |
Using 3D digital imaging equipment acquired to establish the Digital Imaging and Visualization in Archaeology (DIVA) Lab at Louisiana State University, we present our findings of the utility of using imaging equipment and software in the lab and field, and present examples of 3D images from the Underwater Maya Archaeological Project, Belize. The major impetus for this project comes from the recovery of thousands of artifacts from ancient Maya sites in a peat bog below the sea floor in Paynes Creek National Park, Belize, where remains of dozens of ancient wooden buildings and associated artifacts of wood, stone, pottery, and shell have been mapped and collected. Since wood normally decays rapidly in the tropics, the wooden buildings are unique in the Maya area and warrant careful documentation, study, and sharing of results with colleagues, students, and the interested public. We have used 3D imaging for the Underwater Maya project by scanning artifacts for :(1) a permanent record; (2) for sharing images at conferences and with the public; (3) for sharing images on a publically accessible web site; (3) for manipulating fragile and/or waterlogged artifacts in virtual space instead of handling them; (4) to manipulate 3D images of artifacts to answer research questions, such as comparing cutting edges of stone tools with cut marks on wooden building posts; (5) to make accurate 3D copies of artifacts that can be measured; (6) for making 3D images of artifacts that can be printed in 3D for display and study. |
