Abstract: Textiles form part of a complex network of signifiers that circulate information about cultural knowledge and identity. Historical accounts from the sixteenth century and the archaeological record in Mesoamerica shed light on the function of textiles as symbols of social class, ethnicity, gender as well as a form of tribute, economic exchange, and political power in prehistoric times. In the absence of preserved textiles, scholars have turning their attention to more durable weaving implements such as spindle whorls to understand the nature of textile production. Utilizing spindle whorls recovered during the 2009 field season in Ican River Region of Suchitepéquez, Guatemala we examine the process of fibers spinning in order to understand the technical, social and economic changes to the production of textiles during the Classic period. Specifically, we seek to identify what local fiber resources were used along the Pacific coast of Guatemala and what fibers were favored for the various types of textiles produced.
