| Abstract: |
This paper aims to reorient perspectives employed in traditional household archaeology by advocating a greater appreciation for the materiality of home life. The domicile and the domestic activities that sustain it constitute one of the most enduring subjects of archaeological inquiry, a subfield that continues to evolve and produce fresh insight into the daily lives of past communities. My research combines established approaches to the study of architecture and the archaeological household with more recent theoretical perspectives on the embodied practice of daily life and materiality. The temporal and geographic backdrop for this investigation is the Bronze Age of southern Italy (c. 2500-900 BC), a period that has revealed a rich settlement record exhibiting an enduring and coherent tradition of vernacular architecture. Employing this subject matter I suggest that we must step away from the household concept as a prefabricated social collective and direct greater attention to the affordances of the domestic built environment itself and the material practices involved in the mutual constitution of physical and social structures. How do residential structures and lived spaces work as material culture in an active, dialectical sense? How can we confront the emergent qualities of ‘dwelling’ (sensu Ingold 2000) in the material record of the home? Insight into these issues is aided by the results of recent archaeometric analyses. |
