Abstract: This case-based ethics practicum (roundtable) is an opportunity for practitioners and students to discuss challenging and complex ethical issues in anthropological practice. Four professional anthropologists will each present a case which represents either a specific area of practice or a particular issue in practice, and will then lead the audience in an analysis of that case and potential resolutions. We will work together to figure out what we know and don’t know from the facts as presented in the case; who the stakeholders and interested parties are; what different actions could be taken to resolve the conflict represented in the case; and what the consequences of those actions would be, and for whom. Importantly, these discussions give us the opportunity to hear different viewpoints about issues of practice, and different approaches to both anticipating and resolving ethical issues.

This practicum session is jointly sponsored by the Committee on Ethics and NAPA, and is modeled after those initiated by NAPA over 10 years ago. The Committee on Ethics will be co-sponsoring this practicum each year at the AAA meetings, with different committees/sections/associations of the AAA.
