Anthropology News
GUIDELINES FOR FEATURE NEWS ARTICLES

News articles published in Anthropology News are designed to brief readers on the latest work by their colleagues, trends in the field and association business. Articles should convey bottom-line results: the who, why, and what (concrete examples).

The AN serves as both a unifying force for the discipline and as an educational tool for professionals and students. It is currently the most widely distributed publication for anthropologists in the world (and potentially the most widely read), and as such owes its readers the most accurate and substantive information about what it is we do and issues relevant to our profession. Moreover, because AN is also readily available to the many journalists who contact the Association regularly, news articles in particular can have even broader appeal, to the public at large.

Details

  • Maximum 600-800 words (approximately 3 pages double-spaced).
  • Such pieces are most easily produced and digested by arranging the contents into 2-3 sub-heads.
  • Keep in mind that 99.9% of your readers will not be familiar with your specialty and its particular jargon. Write for this audience.
  • Begin with the bottom line—the most important point you wish to make.
  • Report on the subject you are writing about, but do not editorialize or provide commentary.
  • Choose a concrete “fact” or aspect of your research to illustrate in each section.
  • Quoting colleagues or professionals or your news topic is a useful way to report on trends, events and actions.
  • Add a 30-word biographical paragraph at the end, including information on your most recent publication or activity of interest to readers [this will appear in italics].
  • Submissions must be electronic—either email, disk, or CD—and I will be glad to work with you on a first draft. If sending a disk/CD also send a hard copy with the final manuscript, as a backup.
  • A photo or illustration is an important addition, please include either something from a publication or from your own files with an accompanying caption and photo credits. Close-up photos showing some kind of action or interaction are generally the most effective. Illustrations may be submitted as slides, prints or electronically (minimum 300dpi).
