Relevant Resolutions in the History of AAA

1949 Resolution on Academic Freedom

Resolved that the American Anthropological Association go on record as favoring investigation by the Executive Board in cases where the civil rights, academic freedom and professional status of anthropologists as such have been invaded, and take action where it is apparent that injustice has resulted that affects their rights as citizen and scientist ….

1969 Resolution on Classified Research

Resolved that members of the AAA shall not engage in any secret or classified research.

1982 Motion on CIA and Military Intelligence Recruitment of Anthropologists

Whereas the CIA and US military have been engaged actively in the recruitment of anthropologists for research and other positions on behalf of US foreign policy interests;

Whereas the Principles of Professional Responsibility provide the classified research not be undertaken and that the safety and welfare of the subjects of research not be endangered;

Whereas, both direct and indirect CIA and US military involvement—particularly at this time in Latin America—is supportive of regimes which are engaged in overt repression of indigenous peoples, in some cases implementing genocidal policies in Guatemala;

Whereas, it is impossible to verify that research undertaken under the sponsorship of these agencies will not be classified, or to verify that the subjects of prospective research for such agencies would not be endangered;

Whereas the Northeastern Anthropological Association resolved in 1982 that anthropologists should not engage (1) in work for the CIA and US military intelligence, (2) in training students for work in these agencies, or (3) in assisting in these recruitment of anthropologists for work in these agencies;

Therefore, be it moved that the AAA endorse the resolution passed by the NEAA, and call upon the Executive Board to transmit this motion to the President of the United States, the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, and the Secretary of Defense.
