COUNCIL ON NUTRITIONAL ANTHROPOLOGY
2000-2001Relevant to long-range plan objective
#1, dissemination of new knowledge

The following activities, as reported by the CNA Executive Board,
have been completed since last year. Although other activities did
take place, those reported below are most relevant to the AAA long-range
goals.
Relevant to long-range plan objective #1, dissemination of new knowledge
- Periodic updates of CNA webpage in conjunction with AAA website
- Published 12 columns in AN
- Published Spring and Fall 2001 issues of Nutritional Anthropology
newsletter
- Sponsored 2 invited sessions (i.e., Nutritional Anthropology
and the Anthropological Enterprise: Retrospective and Prospective
Applications and Food and Feminism) and 1 session
on individually submitted papers (i.e., Consuming Choices: Deciding
What to Eat and How to Prepare It at the AAA meetings.
- Sponsored CNA Distinguished Speaker Lecture and Reception at the
AAA meetings. This years speaker was Dr. Sidney Mintz and his
talk was on Heroes Sung and Unsung: Toward a History of Food
Studies.
- Presented Wilson Award at the AAA meetings. This years winner
was George Luber (University of Georgia) for his paper Second
Hair Illness in Two Mesoamerican Cultures: A Biocultural Study of
the Ethnomedical Diagnosis of Protein-Energy Malnutrition.
This paper will be published in Nutritional Anthropology.
Relevant to long-range plan objective #XIII, promote the
attraction of practicing anthropologists (and others interested in nutritional
anthropology)
- Sent out 60 notices to lapsed CNA members encouraging them to rejoin
the section
- Sent out over 200 CNA brochures to Society for Nutrition Education
Public Health Nutrition members
- Sponsored a CNA and Society for Nutrition Education session at the
2001 Annual Meeting of the Society for Nutrition Education (i.e.,
Delivering Culturally Sensitive Messages: The Role of Nutritional
Anthropology). Approximately 150 people attended this session
- In process of organizing join CNA and SNE sponsored session at the
2002 AAA meetings
- Formed ad hoc committee to look at curriculum recommendations for
nutritional anthropologists involved in applied community nutrition
research
- With assistance from the AAA, Nutritional Anthropology has been
assigned an ISSN number by the Library of Congress, which will be
attached to all future issues.
Relevant to long-range plan objective #XIII, state of the art communication
:
- CNA webpage now includes an unedited version of the AN column as
well as a list of food web sites highlighted in the past
- Graduate programs in nutritional anthropology still highlighted
in CNA webpage. Plan to update these programs in 2002
Other Important Activities include:
- Approved final changes in by-laws
- Efforts underway to develop a portable CNA display
- Elected new Board Officers
