January 2003
NOMINATIONS COMMITTEE ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2002

The Nominations Committee is different from other committees and commissions in that it has a specific task which is determined by the By Laws and it does not have an independent budget.

1. The stated tasks for 2002 were to create a slate for the 2003 elections from the list of candidates submitted by the membership. This job was completed and sent to the Executive Board for approval at the AAA Meetings, November 2002. They gave their approval and selected candidates for the open seats on the Nominations Committee for 2003 which is not the responsibility of the Nominations Committee.

2. The tasks planned for 2003 are the same. Budget may become an issue as the Association reduces the number of face to face meetings, but we feel that because of the sensitivity of the discussion that take place, this committee should continue to meet the two days before the Annual Meetings.

3. I do not think the goals of the Committee have changed. We strive to present the Executive Board with a well matched set of candidates.

4. I can think of nothing that we can suggest to the Long Range Planning Committee.

5. We hope that the Executive Board will consider taking a more active role in soliciting potential candidates. Just before the deadline for nominations, we had only nine submissions for 42 slots. Fortunately, an intense barrage of phone calls resulted in a fine pool from which to choose. Some people are still complaining about filing on line. We will try once again to clarify the instructions for both those who file and those who write as supporters. Most of the problems are the result of inexperience with e-forms, but we will strive once again to make this crystal clear. As usual, we had a few people who agreed to run and then had second thoughts when they were put on the slate. This was particularly egregious in one case. Once the ballots have been printed, of course, their names must appear without supporting materials. This information is available but apparently skipped over in the thrill of nomination.

Respectfully submitted,
Margery Wolf Secretary Chair, Nominations Committee
