1. Membership: it varies between 2,000 and 2,500

2. Financial balances: around $50,000

3. AAA Meeting activities
- from the report of Ann Maxwell Hill, Program Chair for 2003: fewer session submissions than last year (42 vs. 76), higher acceptance rate (89% vs 50%0. GAD invited 5 sessions and of the volunteered and created sessions, only the 4 with C ratings were rejected by the AAA committee. In all, 42 sessions (272 abstracts) were reviewed.

- GAD sponsored two teaching workshops:
The Third Annual Institute for Teaching Anthropology, Wednesday, 9-1. Although in 2002 we A full group with 30 (at $60 per), this year we had only 18 preregistered, and of those onlythree attended. (A few others dropped in.) No explanation for this. Wine and Cheese Roundtable: Conversations on Teaching, organized by the Committee onTeaching Anthropology, Thursday, 6:30-8. Well attended.

-The General Anthropology Award, for the first time, for exemplary cross-field scholarship,was presented to Carlos E. A. Coimbra, Jr., Nancy M. Flowers, Francisco M. Salzano, and Ricardo V. Santos for their book, "The Xavante in Transition. Health, Ecology, and Bioanthropology in Brazil."

-The GAD Distinguished Lecture, "Ethnography In/Of Nations" was presented by Lila Abu-Lughod

4. Publications
- Peter Brown, President-Elect, continues to edit the GAD column in the Anthropology News.

- Pat Rice and David McCurdy continue to edit General Anthropology.

5. Committees
CASTAC, The Committee on the Anthropology of Science, Technology, and Computing, are Active and planning their next meeting.

COTA, The Committee on Teaching Anthropology, has revived and organized the Wine and Cheese Roundtable.

FOSAP, The Committee on Small Anthropology Programs, continues to publish the FOSAP Newsletter.

HAC - History of Anthropology Committee, the newest one under the GAD wing, is expecting toAdopt a newsletter. More later.

CAJJ, The Committee on the Anthropology of Jews and Judaism, has not been heard from for Two years.

6. Future plans
- continue to develop teaching workshops, and look forward to working with the standing AAA committee on teaching.
- continue to award the General Anthropology Award, but limit it to an journal article of exemplary cross-field scholarship (thus avoiding overlapping the many other book awards.)
- continue to nurture the special interest committees.
- update the GAD by-laws (at the 2004 Board meeting in San Francisco, to go on the 2005 ballot.
